23 Essential Backpacking Gear,Backpacking, in my mind, is that nice combo of hiking and camping combined. You are ready to take your hiking up another level, and really challenge yourself by going into backpacking. Backpacking can be just one night or multiple nights out on a trail depending on how long and difficult the terrain may be. Having the essential gear with you that is lightweight and covers all your safety needs is necessary to have a successful backpacking trip. Here is my list of essential backpacking gear items I would never forget to bring without me. You may need to bring a couple more items depending on your terrain and distance covered but these are vital! Backpacking Gear 1. Large pack 2. Hydration bladder or water bottles 3. Water filtration system 4. Hiking clothing, shoes, hat, and sunglasses 5. Packing cubes 6. First aid kit 7. Small tent or hammock/rain fly 8. Light weight sleeping bag 9. Sleeping pad 10. Blow up Pillow 11. Portable stove and cookware 12. Dehydrated meals, snacks, electrolyte powder, and tea or coffee 13. Headlamp or small flashlight 14. Batteries or solar power chargers 15. Phone, Map, GPS system, Hiking trail Apps 16. Multipurpose tool or knife 17. Trekking poles 18. Toilet paper and shovel, or use a Wag Bag 19. Baggies for trash (Remember pack in what you pack out) 20. Fire starter or matches, and small saw or hatchet for making a fire 21. Personal Toiletries and Sanitary Wipes 22. Bug repellant 23. Optional: Bear Canister, if you know you're in bear country then this is great to put smelly items in, and place far away from your sleeping area so you don't attract any bears to your campsite. Also, if you are in Bear country then I would bring bear spray too. If you're a bit nervous to try backpacking, I recommend taking classes online from experienced backpackers or at REI, practice setting up your campsite at home and make sure all your gear works, find a more local backpacking trail so you know the terrain and possible wildlife encounters, and also go with an outdoor buddy to help you feel more at ease. The more you can educate yourself before going out will help you feel more confident and prepared to take on anything that may come your way! Happy backpacking y'all! |
